This is a must read for any cat owners in this day and age because we all love the beautiful smells of essential oils and candles. But are they harmful to our pets? Well here’s the truth on this subject…

Essential oils can cause problems for all your pets, but they are particularly dangerous for cats. Cats lack an essential enzyme in their liver and because of this have great difficulty metabolizing and eliminating essential oils. These oils are breathed in orally and also absorbed through the skin, if they cannot be metabolized they then become toxic. The higher the concentration of oil the more danger for your cat.

The list of toxic oils

Oil of Wintergreen

Oil of Sweet Birch

Peppermint Oil

Penny Royal Oil

Clove Oil

Eucalyptus Oil

Cinnamon Oil

Citrus Oil

Pine Oil

Tea Tree Oil

Ylang Ylang Oil

Symptoms of Essential Oil Poisoning in your Cat

If your cat inhales these strong odor ( from smoking candles as well) you might see

Watery eyes and nose

Drooling

Vomiting

Difficulty Breathing

Panting

Wheezing

Coughing

If your cat has these symptoms they need to be moved to a fresh air environment!!

As well if your cat gets and droplets on him or the oil is somehow absorbed through the skin similar symptoms will appear including the above list along with…

Low Heart Rate

Wobbliness

Low Body Temperature

And Eventual Liver Failure at its worst

Basically it would be best to just not use essential oils. There are organic candles that are safe for your fur babies. And never apply any concentrated essential oil directly on your cat this would surely put them into a toxic state.

If you do purchase organic candles like soy, beeswax, or coconut wax it is still important to make sure if they are scented….what are they scented with? Do your homework….take care of your kitties.
