HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CATS. HOW THEIR AGE AND HEALTH CAN AFFECT THEIR PLAYING LEVEL AND HOW YOU CAN HELP KEEP THEM ACTIVE AND STIMULATED.
All cats have a different range of personalities and activity levels. Once they reach adulthood they are either still rubbing your legs and wanting to play or sitting on your lap and saying ” this is just fine”lol.
Cats need stimulation and most of the toys we use to play with them are only as good as the human on the other end .
I mean go to any pet store and you will see poles with feathers, catnip toys, balls of many sorts, bells , tunnels etc. These are all great toys and its up to you to figure out which one is right for your kitty. Don’t give up !!! It’s so important to play with your cat everyday. I usually get up and go right downstairs, grab the feather stick right away and play for about 20 min …. I run them ragged. This is a good time for us because they are both on my sleep schedule , so they are wide awake in the morning.
A cats play peak occurs in their first year of life(as a kitten) and then declines from there. But cats that are played with early and stimulated will go on to stay playful and active for a longer period of time. Having an active and playful cat will also give you a better insight to when your cat is not feeling well, stressed or just not happy …as they will not want to play when they usually would….light bulb moment!!
WHY CATS PLAY AND WHY ITS GOOD FOR THEM AND YOU.
Play teaches cause and effect, i.e hitting the ball sends it bouncing away. It teaches them about their world and what happens when they jump, swat and land on certain things.
Play teaches them kitty rules and how to use their teeth and claws. Apparently it hurts when you bite your own tail…lol
Play teaches them coordination between eye and paw and strengthens their little kitty muscles
In Adult Cats..
Play allows your cat to relieve stress and tension in a way that won’t claw up you furniture or put scratches on your hands and feet. (hopefully) It lets them access their predatory instinct by killing the feather or toy mouse which intern lets them vent.
Play with interactive toys allows your cat to learn that you are a source of fun!!! You are the one creating the play with the feather wand or ball…..It strengthens the bond between you and your kitty ….remember you are their whole world!!
Play exercises their minds as well as there bodies. Feline obesity is very prevalent and can cause many health issues in cats. So exercise is a good way to make sure your cat stays at a good weight. Also feline Alzheimer’s is on the rise and stimulating their minds will help reduce this risk.
I have found from personal experience that the BEST cat toys are once again different for each cat.
For my Fury he loves the wand with the feather hanging off it for interactive play. But he will also toss around this fabric fish with catnip in it when he wants to play solo…its so cute!!!
Jemma on the other hand isn’t a big fan of toys she loves to be chased up and down the stairs, likes to play rough with Fury and likes to play on her cat tree.
Here are three of the most popular toys that people buy for their cats. I have all of these and obviously love the feathered wand…. but also my cats play together with the roller tower. This is awesome to watch and has helped create the bond that they now have. As for the collapsible tunnel Jemma loved this for a certain period of time as a 1 year old…. This is a great toy to get for a rescue cat. I had this and she would hide in it as she watched me work in the kitchen. Every once in a while I would rustle it ….she really liked that and it was the beginning of our playful bond.
